A new series of the popular TG4 traditional music programme Geantraí, will be broadcast on TG4 starting on Sunday, January 29, 2012, for a 13 week run. The programme will be repeated on Fridays at 8pm on TG4.
The series which has built up a loyal audience among traditional music followers in Ireland and abroad will again feature musicians from well-known session pubs around Ireland.
Over the years many prominent names in traditional music have featured in the series, but also the talent of promising newcomers or indeed some quality veteran players not always in the public eye, have been recognised in the programmes.
The Geantraí series features a different musician/presenter each week and the impressive list in the new series includes box player Christy Leahy, Dervish singer Cathy Jordan, Ennis fiddle player Carmel O’Dea, fiddle player Fionn Mac Giolla Chuda, piano player Mary Corcoran, guitarist & box player Ciaran Kelly, fiddle player Brenda Curtin, piper Ronan Browne, fiddle player Aisling Ní Choisdealbha, piper Peter Browne, bouzouki player Donal Lunny, box player Paudie O’Connor and banjo player Pádraic Mac Donnchadha.
This first programme of the new series is presented by box player Christy Leahy and comes from The White Horse Pub in Ballincollig, Co. Cork, where he plays with piano player Caoimhín Vallely. Also featured in the programme are the group The Raw Bar Collective, piper Eoghan Ó Riabhaigh and singer Fiona Kelleher.
The second programme (05/02/12) comes from The Harp Tavern in Sligo and is presented by singer Cathy Jordan of Dervish and The Unwanted with Semie O’Dowd and Rick Epping. Also featured in the programme is the young Sligo group JPTrio.
